WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sunland Inc. has expanded its recall of peanut butter products to include cashew butters, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products, linked to a Salmonella scare that caused Trader Joe's to recall its Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter in September.
According to a statement released by Sunland, the voluntary recall was initiated after learning that between June 11 and Sept. 2, 29 people reported Salmonella Bredeney PFGE matching illnesses in approximately 18 states. That number now comes in at 30 illnesses in 19 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, particularly the many families who enjoy our peanut butter everyday," said Jimmie Shearer, president and CEO of Sunland, in a statement. "While FDA, CDC, and state health agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Peanut and Cashew Butters, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012."
