World Market Recalls Emek Products as Salmonella Outbreak Continues

World Market has initiated a recall of an Emek brand pistachio cream spread as the FDA and CDC, in collaboration with state and local partners, continue to investigate illnesses in a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections linked to pistachio cream manufactured by Emek Dogal Saglik Urunleri Iklim Gida Insaat San Tic Ltd Sti in Turkey.

As part of FDA’s investigation, state partners at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) collected additional samples of other Emek-brand products containing pistachio cream that were available for sale at World Market retail locations. Retail samples of Emek Spread Pistachio Cacao Cream with Kadayif have tested positive for Salmonella.

Additional testing is underway to determine if the strains of Salmonella found in these products are linked to illnesses in this outbreak.

In response to this investigation, World Market has initiated a recall of 9.7- oz Emek Spread Pistachio Cacao Cream with Kadayif. This product was sold in 9.7- oz glass jars with BATCH NO: 250401, UPC number 8 69652 10130 1 and a best before date of April 1, 2027.

The recalled products were sold primarily in World Market retail stores located in the states of Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak is linked to four illnesses and one hospitalization, according to FDA.

FDA is working to determine a possible source of contamination and if additional recalls of Emek products are necessary.
