SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — In the food service and processing industry, cleanliness is one of the most important factors. For many, ensuring cleanliness has meant endless hours of hand-scrubbing and inspection by employees, costing valuable labor and time. But for many, ultrasonic cleaning is changing all that.

Omegasonics Corporation is an innovative provider of ultrasonic cleaning equipment with a wide variety of applications. The main advantages of using ultrasound are the elimination of the need for toxic solvents in cleaning, lower labor costs and time saving.

Dirty or contaminated objects are placed in a chamber or tank containing a water-based cleaning soap.  An energy-converting transducer is then electronically activated to produce sonic frequencies approaching 40,000 cycles per second.  Cleaning is accomplished as energy is released by the creation and collapse (called cavitation) of microscopic bubbles formed at these ultrasonic frequencies.  The resultant shock waves break up and lift off dirt and other contaminants.

In many instances, the solutions are heated to approximately 150° F to accelerate the cleaning process. Typical cleaning times range from only 30-40 minutes depending on how dirty the initial part is. Omegasonics helps clean many types of materials. The major difference in cleaning is the chemistry used.

Users have not only found the method to be more cost-effective in terms of labor and time, they’ve also found it to do a more effective job of cleaning. It is also safer for employees, since it uses non-toxic, water-based solutions.

The method has been found in many other diverse applications throughout the food industry, including the cleaning of baking pans in bakeries, the frequent cleaning of vent hoods in canneries, the cleaning of returned water dispensers used in offices and anywhere else thorough cleaning is required.
