SEOUL — South Korea and the United States will start two days of negotiations on Thursday to discuss beef trade rules, the Agriculture Ministry said Tuesday.

The officials will seek ways to smooth a beef trade dispute after Seoul temporarily stopped U.S. beef shipments last week because inspectors found banned spinal material.

It was not the first time Seoul has imposed a suspension after the country accepted in April the first shipment of the meat since December 2003, but the move was sure to vex the U.S. beef industry, which has been hoping for increasing trade with the Asian nation.

A U.S. delegation led by Chuck Lambert, deputy agriculture undersecretary, is expected to ask Seoul to remove all restrictions on U.S. beef during this trip.
