SEOUL ¯ The United States and South Korea have made some progress in talks to rewrite Seoul's import sanitation standards for U.S. beef, a government official told Tradingmarkets.com.
South Korean Assistant Agriculture Minister Min Dong-seok said both countries made headway in the last 24 hours, adding that the "summit" is within sight.
"Both sides are expected to come to (today’s) talks with compromise proposals for detailed review," he said, hinting that an announcement may come by the end of the day. This is much different from the feedback given following Tuesday's talks when Mr. Dong-seok said the forecast was not good.
South Korea has clung to the need to maintain certain limits on beef imports, while the U.S. has called on Seoul to acknowledge the U.S. as a "risk controlled" country for bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the article said.
