Tyson Foods hopes to increase production at its meat processing plant in Buffalo and add perhaps 150 workers to the current 450, Chief Executive Richard Bond said during a recent visit.
“We’ve just got to focus more on sales,” Bond said during a press conference outside the plant on Perry Street. “The products are great.”
The plant, operating below capacity, processes deli-style meats like bologna and ham. The products go to foodservice companies and to retail outlets under the Russer and Wilson brands.
Tyson, based in Springdale, Ark., acquired the former Russer plant with its purchase of IBP in 2001. IBP had acquired Buffalo-based Russer in 1999.
The plant packages about 1 million pounds of meat a week, down from a peak of about 1.6 million in 1998 and ’99, Bond said.
The company’s goal is to regain that peak volume, during which the plant had about 600 workers.
