The Pompeian Olive Oil Company has partnered with the Spanish cooperative, Mercaoleo, to meet the growing demand of U.S. consumers. An importer and distributor of olive oil and vinegar in Baltimore, Md., Pompeian was featured in the November/December 2011 issue of QA. The company is owned by the Devico family.
With Spain being one of the world's largest olive oil-producing nations, the equal partnership with Mercaoleo, a subsidiary of DCOOP Group of Spain, will assist in the continued growth of Pompeian, as well as helping increase the quality, safety and traceability of the company’s products, company officials said in an article in the Baltimore Sun. The cooperative will likely supply 50 to 70 percent of Pompeian's olive oil, helping to even out a typically erratic market.
Dcoop is a second-degree cooperative, as its partners are companies, most of which are cooperatives, themselves, whose owners are more than 75,000 farmers in southern Spain.
