MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., has introduced the Thermo Scientific POWERx™, a new line of high-performance x-ray systems for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. The POWERx family consists of 16 industry-leading models, which collectively are capable of inspecting products ranging from small pharmaceutical glass vials to large, multi-package cases.
“The POWERx family complements the Thermo Scientific EZx and PROx x-ray systems and significantly expands our range of x-ray capabilities by addressing our customers’ most demanding applications,” said Joergen Olsson, global vice president of sales for packaging products at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “With the addition of the POWERx products, we now offer a full line of tools to ensure the highest levels of safety and quality in food, beverage and pharmaceutical products.”
The Thermo Scientific POWERx models utilize high-resolution detectors and sophisticated image analysis software to achieve the highest sensitivity and lowest false reject rates possible. Unique Virtual Contaminant Testing software is available to simulate various types, sizes and positions of contaminants to quickly determine how to achieve the best performance in each application. To address emerging pharmaceutical x-ray applications, select models in the POWERx family are compliant with the FDA’s Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 21 part 11. Additional key features of the POWERx product line include:
• State-of-the-art x-ray design and image analysis capability, which optimizes sensitivity and detection probability while virtually eliminating false rejects.
• A wide range of models for upright and horizontal package orientations providing application flexibility in a single vendor solution.
• Remote access hardware and software for support and service, which facilitates quick resolution of problems and minimizes downtime.
• Easy-to-use, extendable detection and inspection software addressable through an icon-based touchscreen HMI. Powerful algorithms are used to detect foreign bodies and inspect multiple package attributes.
• X-ray based mass measurement software, which enables image-based checkweighing of uniform products in applications that do not require the weights and measures compliance of a checkweigher.
• IP 65 (NEMA 4X) dust and washdown compliance, which meets cleanliness requirements in wet or dusty environments.
• Multilingual software and documentation to provide intuitive operation anywhere in the world.
The POWERx S and D models are designed for the highest level of foreign body detection in upright containers including jars, cans, bottles and boxes. The sophisticated D models feature a patented double-beam x-ray architecture designed to detect glass slivers or chips in glass containers with 100% probability. The economical S models utilize the same powerful software, but have a single beam for packages without hidden inspection areas. Both the POWERx S and D models incorporate an inspection tunnel through which a conveyor line can pass, facilitating easy integration into existing production lines.
For packaged products, the POWERx line includes C model flat-bed conveyor systems with an inspection field of view up to 700 mm (27.6 in) wide by 360 mm (14.2 in) high. The larger C models have up to 900 W of x-ray power, making them capable of penetrating the multiple layers of product typically found in end-of-the-line case inspection applications. Smaller, lower-powered models are also available with options for compact, built-in rejection systems.
