SEATTLE – The CDC and FDA are investigating a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to California-based Country Eggs. The outbreak has sickened 95 and left 18 hospitalized, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Country Eggs has issued a recall of cage-free sunshine yolk eggs sold under the brand names Nagatoshi Produce, Misuho and Nijiya Markets. According to the Food and Drug Association, grocery stores and food service distributors in California and Nevada received shipments of "sunshine yolks" or "omega-3 golden yolks," from June 16 through July 9. Each carton is labeled with a code "CA-7695", with sell dates of July 1 through Sept. 16, 2025.

The CDC reports cases as far back as January, with most illnesses occurring mid-June through mid-July. Although California has identified the highest number of cases (73), 12 additional states have reported illnesses: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington. No deaths have occurred, according to CDC.

The real number of those sickened is likely higher than reported, said food safety law firm Marler Clark in an Aug. 28 statement on its investigation of the outbreak, stating that many never seek medical attention or are tested for Salmonella. In addition, the firm, led by food safety attorney Bill Marler, said it takes three to four weeks to positively link a case to an outbreak. The CDC reports that for everyone identified case, approximately 30 more people have been sickened.

Symptoms of foodborne illness can develop after an incubation period of between 6-72 hours, said Marler Clark. Reactive arthritis can develop after a Salmonella infection, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and other functional gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation, heartburn and acid reflux, said the firm.

FDA’s investigation is ongoing. Information will be added to this advisory as updates are released.
