The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) has been hailed as the most sweeping overhaul of food safety legislation in the United States in over 60 years. Signed into law in January, the provision places a higher premium on preventing foodborne disease and grants the Food and Drug Administration additional powers to pursue a more science-based food safety system.
Focusing on every link in the food supply chain, the regulation covers a wide range of safety initiatives, ranging from product traceability to mandatory food recalls. While different aspects of the law will go into effect according to timetables set by the FDA, the food industry is endeavoring to wrap its arms around the massive decree.
