West Lafayette, Ind.—Purdue University's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship is collaborating with Advanced Bioimaging Systems LLC on Wednesday (July 29) for the Food Safety Technology Commercialization Summit, designed to connect university researchers with industry leaders.
The conference, which is free and open to the public, features presentations and a poster session on Purdue's research and technologies in food safety and a panel discussion with industry representatives and experts on the industry's challenges, said Ken Kahn, director of the Burton Morgan Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.
While there is no charge, attendees must register by Saturday (July 25) by contacting the Burton Morgan Center at BDMCenter@purdue.edu or calling Jackie Lanter at 765494-1335. The event offers a full day of presentations:
-- 9-10:30 a.m.: Purdue food safety research and technologies, including new optical biosensor technologies and cell-based systems.
-- 10:45 a.m. to noon: Industry panel on food safety needs and challenges with representatives from Sara Lee, Tyson Foods and McDonald's Corp.
-- Noon to 1 p.m.: Lunch and research poster session.
-- 1-2:30 p.m.: Session includes hands-on presentation of a new technology developed at Purdue with U.S. Department of Agriculture funding. Named BARDOT, which stands for BacteriaRapid Detection using Optical-scattering Technology, the device uses a laser to "fingerprint" bacterial colonies on an agar plate for identifying pathogens in less than 6 minutes.
The Burton Morgan Center is Purdue's interdisciplinary hub for entrepreneurship, facilitating business development for emerging concepts and technologies. The center also leads Purdue's Kauffman Campuses Initiative, which is focused on making entrepreneurship education available across the university's main and regional campuses, enabling any student, regardless of field of study, access to entrepreneurial training.
