Product Recalled by Manufacturer Leads to Multiple Brand Name and Store Recalls

Whole Foods, Kunze Farms, Willamette Filbert Growers, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Harry and David, and Mountain Man Nut &amp; Fruit Co. are recalling hazelnuts due to <EM>salmonella</EM>.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Whole Foods, Kunze Farms, Willamette Filbert Growers, Evonuk Oregon Hazelnuts, Harry and David, and Mountain Man Nut & Fruit Co. are recalling hazelnuts due to salmonella.

Kunze Farms of Dayton, Oregon is recalling 32,950 lbs. of hazelnut kernels due to potential contamination by Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.  Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.  In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditic and arthritis.
 
Hazelnut kernels were distributed to several different processors and wholesaler’s in the following areas:  Dayton, OR; Milton-Freewater, OR; Hauppauge, NY; Mesa, AZ; Cottonwood, AZ; Seattle, WA; Ogden, UT; San Antonio, TX.; and Parker, CO.
 
The product was packed in 25 lb. cartons, under our the product brand name of Kunze Farms, ‘Select Shelled Hazelnuts’ Dayton, Oregon, with the code numbers 289091A or 299091A.
