NSF International Appoints Global Managing Director of Seafood Safety and Quality Programs

Greg Brown brings more than 18 years of expertise in seafood procurement, quality and safety to his new role at NSF International

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Public health organization NSF International has appointed Greg Brown to Global Managing Director of Seafood under its Global Food Division. Brown is an accomplished international seafood safety professional with a reputation for creating effective and sustainable supply chain solutions for aquaculture farms/facilities, retailers, restaurants and distributors.

Following an initial orientation period in the United States, Brown will move to NSF’s Shanghai, China office where he will be stationed permanently, leading a global team of experts that provide product evaluations, laboratory testing, facility audits and certification for seafood companies throughout the supply chain. More than 80 companies and facilities in 13 countries rely on the NSF Seafood team for their technical expertise in Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP), Seafood HACCP, regulatory and retail compliance audits, and certification to Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarked standards. Sampling and sensory analysis for FDA-detained products is also a key service provided by the team.

Brown is responsible for setting NSF seafood safety and quality strategy and working with NSF’s offices and laboratories in key global locations including Seattle, Washington; Dutch Harbor, Alaska; Shanghai, China; Busan, South Korea; Delhi, India; Bangkok, Thailand; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; and Lima, Peru. NSF provides local testing for DNA species identification, fishmeal testing, and chemical and microbiological evaluations, and helps seafood companies comply with the upcoming regulatory requirements of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
Brown’s three decades of diverse food industry experience include developing Darden Restaurants, Inc.’s seafood quality inspection and safety testing program in Asia, which serves as the foundation for NSF’s Global Seafood Program.  As Category Director for Seafood for US Foods, Brown initiated DNA testing for seafood species authenticity, achieved Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) chain of custody certification for its private label seafood and partnered with the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) for Best Aquaculture Practice (BAP) certification of its private label shrimp.  Brown has served as business development consultant to a food safety testing organization and recently spearheaded a national seafood sustainability initiative through strategic sourcing at Caesars Entertainment.

“Greg brings tremendous hands-on experience in every facet of the seafood supply chain, providing NSF customers the expertise they need to achieve continual supply chain improvement, comply with emerging FSMA legislation and overcome new challenges associated with seafood sustainability, safety and quality,” said Tom Chestnut, Senior Vice President of NSF International’s Global Food Division.
“NSF International leads the seafood industry with comprehensive, science-based approaches to product safety, quality, transparency and sustainability. NSF has an exceptional team and by applying our collective technical food safety and quality expertise we help companies address emerging challenges and regulations such as FSMA,” said Greg Brown, Global Managing Director of Seafood, NSF International.
