New Session on Salmonella Saintpaul Announced for IAFP

The late-breaking session covers tomatoes, peppers and cilantro and the recent Salmonella Saintpaul produce-related Outbreak at the August conference.

The recent outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul has dealt another economic blow to the produce industry and again challenged consumers’ confidence. With over 1,000 cases in most of the states, this incident is one of the largest produce-related outbreaks in history. Initially pointing to specific varieties of tomato, investigators later shifted their focus to jalapeño peppers.

Representatives from two U.S. government agencies will share outbreak investigation details, followed by valuable insight from U.S. and Mexico research. A speaker from Mexico will describe how this country managed the incident that affected their exports, leading to significant economic losses for the tomato industry of both Mexico and the U.S.

The session will wrap up with a response from an industry representative followed by a roundtable discussion with all the speakers. Don't miss this opportunity to hear first-hand about the latest details of this investigation and the proposed response from the regulatory agencies and industry.

The new session takes place Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The featured speakers include:

 • Ian Williams, CDC
 • Sherri McGarry, FDA
 • Ketih Schneider, University of Florida
 • Cristobal Chaidez-Quiroz, Centro de Investigacion en Alimentacion y Desarrollo
 • Dave Gombas, United Fresh Produce Association
 • Patty Lovera, Food & Water Watch
