Ahead of the upcoming change in the FDA Food Code, Prometric released a new industry report, “Leave Nothing to Question: Developing the Right Food Safety Assessment Program,” outlining the importance of using quality food safety assessments to test a workforce.
Today’s food safety landscape is ever-changing; sometimes it is predictable, as with the Food Code updates, and other times unpredictable, as when there is an incident of foodborne illness. Foodborne illness is on the rise, affecting 48 million Americans each year. Food recalls continue to impact some of today’s largest companies, reporting of lost sales between $30 million and over $100 million. It is imperative that food safety assessments change in lockstep with the current state of food safety to properly assess the workforce and protect the publics’ health.
Prometric’s industry report discusses three success factors to consider when adopting a preventive approach to food safety:
- Allow those who handle food to demonstrate their knowledge and qualifications accurately and fairly.
- Assure employers that their employees have the skills to do the job that they have been hired to do.
- Offer the means for those in the food, restaurant, and retail industries to be active participants in the safeguarding of public health and safety.
With the stakes so high, it is critical that today’s food and retail industries protect the health of the public and their businesses. A proven way to assure this is to use a reliable food safety assessment provider that can help those on the first line of defense be qualified to prepare and handle food safely.
