Mexican Beef Producers to Renew U.S. Meat Exports

Meat Council President Eugenio Salinas said the Mexican government has informed the council it could start issuing export permits as of next week.

MEXICO CITY — The president of a major Mexican meat producers association said Friday he expects shipments to the United States to resume next week.

Meat Council President Eugenio Salinas said the Mexican government has informed the council it could start issuing export permits as of next week.

Last week, Mexico voluntarily suspended shipments of meat and processed poultry to the United States after U.S. officials found safety problems at several Mexican meat plants.

"It was a voluntary and precautionary suspension," Salinas said.

U.S. inspectors identified systemic problems with sanitation controls and record keeping during an annual audit that took place in Mexico between June 24-31, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
