May Rule Changes Now Limit Poultry Exports to Asia

Rule changes in May now limit the exporting of poultry from Minnesota, New York and West Virginia to Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Taiwan:

  • Effective May 16, all poultry and poultry products originating from Minnesota are ineligible. In addition, shipments transiting Minnesota must be in a sealed container.

Philippines:

  • Raw poultry from West Virginia is now forbidden regardless of production date. Poultry cooked to at least 70° C (158° F) continues to be eligible.

Japan:

  • Egg products derived from eggs laid on or after Nov. 10, 2006, but before March 9 2007, cannot originate from New York or Minnesota, and cannot pass through those states before going to egg processing plants. And egg products derived from eggs laid after March 9 also cannot originate from West Virginia, or pass through any of those three states.
  • Poultry slaughtered in West Virginia prior to March 9 is eligible. Poultry slaughtered on or after that date is ineligible.
