In other news, Insects Limited announced it had recently discovered a new pheromone for the hide beetle, Dermestes maculates. It’s the first time this pheromone has been synthesized, according to Technical Director Alain Van Ryckeghem. “It is a complex beetle pheromone that took me two years and eight components in various ratios to complete,” he said. “The field tests are very encouraging.”
The hide beetle adult is a large blackish beetle with silver markings underneath. This scavenger beetle feeds on dried animal or plant materials of high protein content. The new pheromone comes in a Bullet Lure that will attract from a 15- to 20-foot radius with a duration of 60 to 90 days. The Bullet Lure is placed in a sticky trap or a pit fall trap.
