ARGO, Ill – The National Center for Food Safety and Technology (NCFST), Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), presented its prestigious 2010 NCFST Award to Daniel G. Brown, a 37-year veteran of Hormel Foods Corp., at the consortium’s Mid-Year Meeting held in Burr Ridge, IL, April 6-7, 2010.
The annual NCFST Award recognizes the achievements of an individual in the field of food science and technology who has made outstanding contributions to food safety or nutrition across government, academia and industry. Nominations are evaluated by a selection panel consisting of representatives from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), IIT, and the food industry.
In presenting the award, NCFST executive board member Phil Minerich, VP Research and Development, Hormel Foods Corp, said, “On behalf of NCFST’s members and staff, it is my great pleasure to present Dan Brown with the 2010 NCFST Award. Today, we recognize Dan’s proactive leadership and exemplary contributions to NCFST and the food industry in advancing technical and scientific understanding of food safety principles, technology and systems.”
Specifically, said Minerich, the NCFST award recognizes Brown’s key role as a member of the highly successful seven-year, industry-supported collaborative Dual Use Science and Technology (DUST) consortium that resulted in development of a novel food sterilization technology, pressure assisted thermal sterilization (PATS). He has also shared his considerable expertise as a contributor to the development of an NCFST white paper to be published in the summer of 2010 on the Food Safety Objective (FSO) approach to controlling Clostridium botulinum in shelf-stable foods.
Brown joins the NCFST Award Hall of Fame, which includes Jon DeVries, PhD, General Mills
