General Mills will invest about $100 million in an expansion of its existing Albuquerque, N.M., plant, according to city officials.
Mayor Martin Chávez made the initial announcement Tuesday night as part of his state of the city address. Minneapolis-based General Mills selected Albuquerque over six to eight other cities, said Deirdre Firth, manager of the city’s economic development division. The company would not reveal which cities Albuquerque was competing with.
The company opened its current operation, which makes breakfast cereals, in 1991. It currently employs about 190 in its facility at 3501 Paseo del Norte NE. The new addition will add about 160,000 square feet and employ 60. It will focus on manufacturing snack products. That’s good news for Albuquerque, Firth said, because it means the facility will diversify its production.
