Geoff Williams, who covers the business of food for Forbes magazine, noted that food recalls seem to be on the rise in 2016, with 25 issued during the month of January.
Williams cited recent recalls from Whole Foods/North Atlantic Kitchen, Giant Food Stores LLC, Mahina Mele Farms, LLC, Trader Joes, and The Good Earth Egg Company, as examples of recent-high profile cases.
In some cases, Williams noted, the issue was labeling. For example, Whole Foods/North Atlantic Kitchens, headquartered in Everett, Massachusetts, announced a recall of approximately 73,898 pounds of frozen pepperoni pizza products. Nothing was actually wrong with the food. The pepperoni pizza was improperly labeled as containing uncured beef pepperoni. Instead, it actually contained uncured pork pepperoni, and so the food was sent back.
