The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has sent a letter to manufacturers concerning sugar-free claims. The FDA is concerned about the number of products that contain claims regarding the absence of sugar (e.g., "sugar free"), but that fail to bear the required disclaimer statement or locate it conspicuously enough when these foods are not in fact "low" or "reduced in" calories.
The agency said it will take action against those products that fail to meet each of the requirements of the regulation 21 CFR 101.60(c).
