FDA recently published an update on activities related to its Strategic Policy Roadmap. The roadmap includes four priority areas identified in the roadmap to help further its commitment to advance public health, one of which is to “Empower consumers to make better and more informed decisions about their diets and health; and expand the opportunities to use nutrition to reduce morbidity and mortality from disease.”
In the execution of that priority area, FDA has made new efforts to strengthen regulation of dietary supplements by modernizing and reforming FDA’s oversight, and announced new steps it intends to advance to achieve these goals:
- Communicating to the public as soon as possible when there is a concern about a dietary supplement on the market.
- Ensuring that its regulatory framework is flexible enough to adequately evaluate product safety while also promoting innovation.
- Continuing to work closely with industry partners.
- Developing new enforcement strategies.
- Continuing to engage in a public dialogue to get valuable feedback from dietary supplement stakeholders.
