OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) will require inspectors to review the listeria tests conducted daily by food companies while it decides if the current system of monthly checks is adequate.
The interim change, to be implemented within days, will remain in place until a final decision is made about whether adjustments are necessary to the new Compliance Verification System (CVS), Brian Evans, executive vice-president of the agency, said Tuesday.
The new inspection system was implemented in April at every federally regulated meat plant across the country.
The CFIA launched a policy review after a listeriosis outbreak linked to 20 deaths was traced back to tainted meat at a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.
