In response to deadly E. coli outbreaks last year, lawmakers in Congress have proposed legislation creating a Food Safety Administration, responsible for protecting the food supply from all forms of contamination.
"I believe the food safety system is broken. It's collapsing," said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut, who introduced the legislation in the House. "We're unable to protect the public health. We're unable to protect public confidence in the food supply."
