WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Science and Research (CSR) Strategic Plan. The CSR Strategic Plan provides a blueprint for FDA research that supports the agency’s effort to address food, dietary supplement, and cosmetic safety concerns and to implement new Food Safety Modernization Act mandated regulatory responsibilities.
In designing the CSR Strategic Plan, the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) identified five strategic goals it believes have the greatest impact for modernizing the nation’s food safety system and protecting the public health. It then designated research outcomes to support those goals. The five strategic goals that CFSAN’s research is designed to support are:
- Better controlling and preparing for hazards
- Creating faster and validated methods
- Influencing consumer behavior toward healthy dietary choices
- Developing leading edge technology for understanding and evaluating scientific information
- Improving FDA’s adaptability and responsiveness
The CSR Strategic Plan, which is available on FDA’s website, is fully aligned with FDA's strategic priority to Implement a New Prevention-Focused Food Safety System to Protect Public Health and supports both the cross-cutting and program goals of the Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine (OFVM) Strategic Plan and implements that plan within CFSAN.
Through consistent and sustained planning in coordination with OFVM, CFSAN research can better provide critical information for preventing and controlling hazards that threaten the nation’s food supply, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.
