Beef and Chicken Label Switch Prompts Recall

WASHINGTON — SAMS Food Group, Inc., a Bedford Park, Ill., establishment, is recalling more than 13,000 pounds of beef and chicken base products because the labels were inadvertently switched, according to the USDA.

The beef base product contains wheat gluten and soy protein, which are known allergens. Those ingredients are not in the chicken base product and are therefore not declared on the chicken base label, the department said in a release.

The following products are subject to recall:
• 16-ounce white plastic jars of "DAS DUTCHMAN ESSENHAUS CHICKEN BASE, AMISH COUNTRY KITCHEN." Each jar bears the establishment number "EST. P 18796" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
• 16-ounce white plastic jars of "DAS DUTCHMAN ESSENHAUS BEEF BASE, AMISH COUNTRY KITCHEN." Each jar bears the establishment number "EST. 18796" inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The chicken and beef base products were produced on various dates between November 6 and November 29, 2006, and were shipped to a distributor in Indiana for further retail distribution.

The problem was discovered following consumer complaints related to the product label switch. FSIS has received no reports of illness due to consumption of these products, the department said.
