African Union to Create Food Safety Body

Officials say a continental food safety authority could boost trade and help stop food-borne illness.


KIGALI, Africa - The African Union (AU) is looking to create a food safety body to boost trade and avert food-borne illness, The New Times reports.

At a two-day workshop in Kigali, officials posited benefits from such an authority. Prof. Ahmed El Sawalhy, direcor of AU's Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources said the establishment of a food safety authority would boost trade and bolster standards of living throughout the continent. 

"In other parts of the world, such as European Union, there exists the European Food Safety Authority and a Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF)," said Minister of Trade and Industry Francois Kanimba. "Our body could be along similar lines, but taking into consideration the several food safety, cultural, social, economical, political and even scientific peculiarities of our continent.
