The nation's largest chicken producer, Pilgrim's Pride, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday. Here's a look at the top five players in the chicken industry as of the middle of 2008:

  • Pilgrim's Pride: 23 percent of market share, average weekly production of 170 million pounds
  • Tyson Foods: nearly 19 percent, with production of 140 million pounds
  • Perdue Farms: 7.6 percent, with production of 56 million pounds
  • Sanderson Farms: 5.6 percent, with production of 41 million pounds
  • Wayne Farms: 4.6 percent, with production of 34 million pounds
