KENT, England — England’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has added a 3-kilometer surveillance zone near Kent and outside the original surveillance zone for foot and mouth disease in Surrey.

Debby Reynolds, DEFRA’s chief veterinary officer, said foot and mouth disease has not been confirmed in the new zone, but officials were taking precautions to prevent further spread of the disease.

"We are in a crucial week for vigilance and planning next steps," Reynolds said. "Today’s developments are part of our ongoing surveillance and testing and I would take this opportunity to reiterate the need for the highest standards of biosecurity on farms, and for people to remain vigilant for disease and report any suspicions quickly."
