HERSHEY, PA — Tröegs Independent Brewing announces its partnership with Patagonia Provisions, the food and beverage division of outdoor apparel company Patagonia, to brew a lager-style beer incorporating the regenerative perennial grain Kernza.
Last summer, Patagonia Provisions launched its pilot brewery partnership program with independent craft breweries across the U.S., each brewing regional-specific beers made with Regenerative Organic Certified Kernza and other organic ingredients.
Tröegs joins Patagonia Provisions and now 20 other breweries in a movement to scale regenerative and organic ingredients that improve soil health, restore ecosystems and promote a sustainable food chain.
“This is our first time brewing with this unique grain,” said Tröegs co-founding brother and brewmaster John Trogner. “Fifteen percent of the grain bill is Kernza, which we combine with organic Pilsner malt to build a crisp backbone.”
Lightly hopped with organic Perle hops, this wildly drinkable lager displays notes of rustic crackers, bright wildflowers and a touch of grassiness.
"Over the past 26 years, Tröegs has grown tremendously but always remained true to its core values of independence and family ownership,” said Paul Lightfoot, Patagonia Provisions general manager. “They support their local farmers in central Pennsylvania, buying more than 225,000 pounds of local grain, honey and fruit every year."
Kernza Lager is available exclusively on draft at Tröegs Independent Brewery in Hershey, Pa.
